Golden Sheers 2012

Frequently Asked Questions

What date is set for the event/venue?

Wednesday 29th February to Saturday 3rd March 2012 at the War Memorial Stadium Masterton. To cope with the expected increase in spectators, a large marquee, “The Catching Pen”, will be erected across the road from the stadium on the Green. It will have a giant screen, live streaming, hospitality bar, TAB facilities and entertainment through the duration.

How many countries are expected to participate?

The last time the World Championships were hosted in NZ, 1996, there were 13 countries represented. In 2010 when Wales hosted the Champs there were 29 countries represented. We are aiming for 20 plus registrations. We are already starting to receive registrations and are expecting athletes from Germany, Ireland, Scotland, England, South Africa, Lesotho, Estonia, Austria, Falkland Islands, Cook Islands, Nuie, Australia, Czech Republic, Japan, China, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, France to name a few.

Has Golden Shears hosted the World Championships in the past?

Yes, three times before in 1980, 1988 and 1996. To find out more about the past fourteen venues and hosts go to www.shearingsports.co.nz

How was NZ chosen to host the 2012 World Championships?

NZ had to apply to the Golden Shears World Council to host the championships and this was done 6 years ago. The next World Championships will be held in 2014 in Gorey, Ireland.

What preparations are being made in the lead-up to the event?

The preparations have been underway for a couple of years now and are on track to ensure a successful event. Preparations have included the siting of a Games Village at the Copthorne Resort, Masterton, a cultural evening, World Dinner, opening ceremony and a number of community events. Party Central will be buzzing and it will be a 'dont miss' event. We have a program where visiting countries can be hosted prior to the event in a number of communities throughout NZ.

Will the normal Golden Shears be held this year as well?

Yes, same time same place, except this year the event will be for four days, not three. Click here to see the full programme of events, and click here to see ticket details.
