Sunday March 2 2008 AUSTRALIA’S world champion shearer Shannon Warnest proved himself again last night in the Trans-Tasman shearing test at New Zealand’s Golden Shears 2008. Warnest took home the new Joseph Paewai Memorial Award for the shearer with the least penalty points in the test. Paewai had been due to represent New Zealand in the test but passed away in December 2008. His iwi, or people, Rangitane Ki Tamaki Nui a Rua, presented the carved greenstone mere to Warnest. The weapon of warriors it is a sign of chieftainship, of challenge and achievement and of effort and commitment. Warnest picked up just 66.972 penalty points ahead Kiwi Paul Avery with 67.559 and the rest of the field who accrued points from 73.182 up to 77.974. The world champ said he was honoured to win the award and said his respect went to Paewai. “A great man,” he said. New Zealand won the test and a full report is available at www.goldenshears.co.nz.
